The focus of our instructors is to create an effective environment for learning and a fun atmosphere for the participants. Our main emphasis as instructors is effective communication with the youngsters.
DIRECTORS:
DEAN FEDORCHUK: Dean is a 9 year member of the ALCAN
Staff. Prior to ALCAN he taught at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks Hockey
Camp. Originally from Winnipeg, Manitoba he played his Junior Hockey for
the Winnipeg South Blues (MJHL), under Head Coach Doug Stokes. After 2
years of Junior Hockey Dean accepted a Scholarship Offer from Head Coach
Don Lucia (presently University of Minnesota) to the University of Alaska-Fairbanks.
The Nanooks and Dean enjoyed great success at UAF. During the 4 years the
Nanooks broke records for wins in a season, cracked the top ten list for
the first time in school history, and led all NCAA Teams in Scoring &
Power Play Pct. Most importantly, the success of the Nanooks helped pave
the way to enter the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA), with
the likes of Michigan, Notre Dame, Michigan State. A 3 time Most Valuable
Player for the Nanooks, Dean was honored as a Hobey Baker Finalist (presented
to the College Hockey Player of the Year), and Second Team All-American.
His senior year he graduated with his Bachelors Business Administration.
After college he spent one season in the International Hockey League (IHL)
with the Michigan K-Wings, under Coach Ken Hitchcock (Dallas Stars). From
1996-2001, Dean played professionally in Germany. In 1997, Neuwied
Die Baren, won the German First Division Championship. Dean was named Player
of the Year by the German Eishockey News. In 1998, Die Baren defended their
Championship in the 36 team league, to win Back-to-Back Titles. This
season he is playing professionally in Denmark for the Vojens Lions.
TAVIS MacMILLAN: Tavis is a 7 year
member of the ALCAN Team. Prior to ALCAN Tavis was an Instructor at the
Sylvan Lake Summer Hockey School for one year. In addition, Tavis taught
the Canadian Professional Hockey Schools in Calgary and Edmonton for four
years, one year as the Head Instructor. Tavis is originally from Milk River,
Alberta. He played one year of Junior Hockey with Grand Prairie and his
final two years of Junior with the Calgary Spurs of the Alberta Junior
Hockey League. In 1990 Tavis was awarded a Scholarship to the University
of Alaska Fairbanks (CCHA), under Head Coach Don Lucia, presently of the
University of Minnesota (WCHA). At UAF Tavis exemplified excellence as
both a Scholar and an Athlete. Off the Ice Tavis maintained a 3.5 GPA while
earning his Bachelors of Business Administration Degree, and he also receivied
the Nanook Scholar Athlete Award. On the Ice Tavis performed at an extraordinary
level. His senior season Tavis led all NCAA Division I Players in Points
and Assists, and was selected as the Nanook Most Valuable Player. His professional
career included a season with the San Jose Rhinos of Roller Hockey International.
After a successful training camp with the Michigan K-Wings of the International
Hockey League, Tavis returned to Alaska and joined the Alaska Gold Kings
of the West Coast Hockey League. In the Gold Kings' inaugural season he
was named as their Assistant General Manager, as well as player, where
he was honored as a Second Team All-Star for the WCHL. Presently, Tavis
is in his fifth season as the Assistant Coach of the same UAF Nanooks for
whom he once starred. He has various duties, with recruiting the major
emphasis of his work.
SAFETY DIRECTOR & FITNESS COORDINATOR:
WAYNE SAWCHUK: Wayne is a 6 year member of the ALCAN Staff. Prior to ALCAN he has taught various camps across Canada & the US as an on ice instructor, off ice fitness coordinator, and Camp Counselor. Wayne grew up and played minor hockey in Kenora, Ontario. He played his junior hockey for the Thunder Bay Flyers of the USHL. Both years in Thunder Bay the team won the Regular Season & Playoff Championships. After 2 years of junior he accepted a scholarship to the University of Alaska Fairbanks. He Captained UAF to Top Ten Rankings & Record Breaking Seasons his Junior & Senior years. He was named Unsung Hero at UAF his Senior year. Following UAF, he went on to teach Physical Education & Coach Hockey at Monroe Catholic High School for two years. He then moved on to Coach the Alaska Gold KIngs during the Inaugural Season of the West Coast Hockey League. Wayne currently teaches Phys. ED. at Anderson Elementary on Eielson Air Force Base. He also coaches Lathrop High School & Fairbanks Amateur Hockey Association Bantam Tier 1 Comp. He also teaches Fitness & Golf Classes at the University of Alaska Fairbanks in the summer.
POWER SKATING:
LISA KRILEY: Lisa is a 6 year member of ALCAN, as she returns each year to give ALCAN players the Ultimate Edge. Lisa has a unique talent in assisting all levels of players to achieve their highest potential. Lisa has worked with students ranging fom Mites & Pee Wees to College & Professional players throughout the State of Alaska. Lisa is Certified by USA Hockey at the Intermediate Coaches Level. In addition to hockey and private one-on-one lessons she teaches college level skating courses at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. We are proud to have Lisa as a member of our staff. Her motto towards hockey players is "Strong Power Skating skills make a strong hockey player, come & learn how to stay in shape and stay on your feet because this ain't no figure skating."
NICK HUBALIK: Dr. Hubalik is a 2 year member of ALCAN. He is a Exercise Physiologist & Sport Psychologist who received his formal training at Arizona State University. He is a member of the American College of Sports Medicine & is Certified as a Health & Fitness Instructor. Nick has been a Fairbanks resident since 1989, spending most of his time as a Professor at UAF where he worked with many UAF teams, as well as individual athletes from all sports. Through his private practice -- Personal Enhancement Consulting -- Nick has counseled athletes at all levels of development including Professional Athletes (Oakland A's, Professional Golf Association, Professional Bowling Association, & Alaska Gold Kings), National Team members from the US & Canada, Fitness Enthusiasts, & youngsters involved in youth and school sports. The practical nature of his approach & techniques not only help the athlete build a sound mind & body, but to acquire positive life skills & attitudes that promote personal success in all aspects of life.
HEAD INSTRUCTOR:
ASSISTANT INSTRUCTORS:Professional, Collegiate, and Junior players experienced in teaching at hockey school. Many of these instructors have been through the ranks of ALCAN themselves as players.
NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE & INTERNATIONAL GUEST INSTRUCTORS
In the past we have invited National Hockey League and International Professional players to Alaska to instruct at the Main Camp in June. The Kids have a great time being taught and meeting the same NHL players that they only get a chance to see on television. The players have an opportunity to see Alaska, go Fly In Fishing, and Golf under the Midnight Sun. Each year we announce our guest instructors very near to the date of the camp. Due to the fact that many NHL teams are in playoff contention or in the playoffs, it is difficult for them to make an earlier commitment.
